The Bahamas is emerging as one of the most pro-active and innovative regions in which Sandwatch operates, with teachers from eleven (11) schools on at least six (6) islands having participated in at least one of Sandwatch's regional workshop.  Below are the homepages of the Bahamian school involved in Sandwatch with details of their schools, communities and participation.

Educators from around the Bahamas and beyond attended a Sandwatch Climate Change Workshop, Hope Town, Abaco, Bahamas, June 2009.

  • June 2009, A Sandwatch/UNESCO Workshop was held in Hope Town, with 20 teachers from several Bahamian islands and other countries attending.
  • Dec 2008, The students of Hope Town Primary School, Ababco submit a story for the December 2008 Special Issue of The Sandwatcher
  • Nov 2008, Mrs. Candace key and two students attend The Sandwatch Cool Youth Workshop in Barbados
  • July 2008, Hope Town School, Abaco students write an article on their 'Reef Doctor Project' (and great photos) for the July '08 Issue of The Sandwatcher.
  • November 2007, Hope Town School, Abaco students submit an article on "Dolphins as an Indicator of Climate Change", for the Nov '07 Sandwatcher
  • June 2007, Hope Town School, Abaco teachers and students submit an article on their efforts to clean a stray fishing net off of their local coral reef, to the June '07 Issue of The Sandwatcher
  • February 2007, the S.C. Bootle High School in Coopers Town, Abaco, joins Sandwatch.  The students led by Mr Enzil Cooper plan to restore the North Abaco Public Beach ; this beach used to be a dumpsite and has a beautiful blue hole and mangroves nearby, see our photos page.
    February 2007, article on Our Caroni Swamp Adventure in the Special Issue of the Sandwatcher newsletter describing the field trip to see the home of the Scarlet Ibis during the Sandwatch Symposium in Trinidad in December 2006.

    January 2007, Friends of the Environment, an NGO at Marsh Harbour , Abaco, decide to launch Sandwatch in two local schools.

    December 2006, a delegation of five including three students participated in the Sandwatch Youth Symposium in Trinidad and Tobago

  • June 2006, Article on their environment and Sandwatch activities published in inaugural issue of The Sandwatcher  newsletter

  • Two schools submitted entries to the UNESCO Community Sandwatch Competition in 2005: Hope Town Primary School in Abaco with an entry entitled ‘Share our care, be aware;’ and Yellow Elder Primary School in Nassau with an entry entitled ‘Operation love your beach.  Hope Town’s entry ‘Share our care, be aware;’ won second prize in the primary school section.

  • Following this workshop Hope Town Primary School in Abaco began Sandwatch activities, and the school’s principal, Ms. Candace Key, accompanied a student, Ms. Katie Joseph, to the Second Sandwatch Workshop, in Dominica in July 2003. Read their account of the workshop.

  • The Bahamas was represented by Mr. Hamblin Newbold at the First Sandwatch Workshop held in St. Lucia in May 2001
