in the Sandwatch Youth Symposium in Trinidad and Tobago

2006, The Dominican Republic's National
Initiative For Sandwatch Project is published.
- September
29, 2006, with the participation of 27 teachers, 6 school
technicians and one student, belonging to educational centers
incorporated to the Dominican ASPnet, we completed with great success
the Sandwatch
Training Workshop
for Teachers and Technicians of the "Observing the Sand"
Project, at the Coopmarena Hotel in Juan Dolio, San Pedro de
Macoris, Dominican Republic.
- The
Centro Educativo Las Americas submitted an entry to the UNESCO Community
Sandwatch competition in 2005. Students, with the help of their teacher, Carlos
Navarro, measured the beach and dunes at Caldera, Baní - these are
among the highest dunes in the Caribbean. This monitoring has been ongoing
for the past 3 years. They also involved other schools in the activities and
conducted a beach clean-up.

The
Centro Educativo Las Americas submitted an entry to the UNESCO Community
Sandwatch competition in 2005. Students, with the help of their teacher, Carlos
Navarro, measured the beach and dunes at Caldera, Baní - these are
among the highest dunes in the Caribbean. This monitoring has been ongoing
for the past 3 years. They also involved other schools in the activities and
conducted a beach clean-up.
- Mr. Carlos Navarro, together with a
student, Mr. Juan Mejia Reyes from the Liceo Secundario Gaston F. Deligne
participated in the second Sandwatch workshop in Dominica in 2003.
- Between
2001 and 2003, Mr. Carlos Navarro, together with the Departments of
Education, Natural Resources, and Culture, and the National Commission for
UNESCO, involved 12 schools
and more than 100
students in Sandwatch monitoring activities at different beaches in the
Dominican Republic. Pollution problems, particularly from the rivers were
among the problems identified.
