Hello fellow
Sandwatchers
Our project for the Community
Sandwatch Competition involved cleaning and restoring the area
around the Jeff Gregg Drain in the island of Bequia in St. Vincent
and the Grenadines. This drain was frequently blocked by debris
causing a major health problem for the residents of the
community.

This year, after receiving numerous
complaints from villagers about the stench coming from the Jeff
Gregg Drain rehabilitation site, Lucille Grant, member of the
Fisheries Division in St. Vincent, and Joanna Stowe, coordinator
of the Sandwatch-Small Islands Voice group, visited the
site on Tuesday 25th May 2006. We collected water samples from
three different locations in the area believed to be highly
contaminated thus making it poor for fishing, bathing or any
kind of use.
Water samples were collected and sent to the fisheries lab in
Kingstown to be tested. Based on the result, it’s the hope of
Sandwatch to post ‘No Bathing’ signs in the area to help
prevent the outbreak of diseases.
Also, with the aid of the Fisheries Division, Sandwatch hopes to
host educational sessions with residents of the area to
sensitize them on the dangers of polluting the water, bathing in
it and also demonstrating how tests are carried out on water
samples.
