CHALLENGING OUR STUDENTS:
Sandwatch in Santos, Brazil
We have an important role in
motivating students to protect the environment where they live, specially
the beaches.
In doing our work, we have hope that not only our planet will be better
but our lives will increase in quality.
Santos Port contributes a lot for the pollution of the local sea with the
discharging of sewage and others materials and contaminants. Along
with all those problems there are the changes of the climate itself which
alter and damage marine habitats causing coastal erosion, flooding and
habitat loss.
We want to expose our students to those problems and present them as the
challenge they have - as the new generation - to figure out ways to make
our sea cleaner and healthier.
As we can see on some of our pictures there a lot to be done.
The playground where children use to play has been invaded by the sand
brought in by the waves, and drainage canals are also covered by the sand. |

The highlight of our last beach
visit is that the city governor (prefeitura) is working on those problems.
As proof that our community is all involved and committed for a better and
healthier life along the sea, TV ATRIBUNA DE SANTOS (the tv station which
covers all the Santos area - about 1 million people) came to film and
broadcasting our students visiting at the beach.
With the TV Station’s support we can show to a wide audience what our
youth are doing to protect our environment and warning them of the need of
better use our coastal areas. |

Last month we also hosted a
group of students coming from Indiana, USA.
They stayed with us for 10 days sharing their experience and visiting our
beaches.
It was awesome to see how proud our students were to show our visitors the
beauty of our city and our seashore.
Now, we are planning a trip to Trinidad and Tobago.
The idea is taking our students to see what the kids from the island are
doing to protect their environment as well as sharing with them the work
our students have done here in Santos.
Our students have researched about Trinidad and Tobago and putting
together a lot of questions about the country. They are very much curious
about "tornados"and "hurricanes" since we watch on TV
about those phenomenon taking places in the Caribbean Sea.
