Coping with Climate Change: Sandwatch Leading The Way
2008 Video Competition - Details & Rules

[Video Guidelines]    [How to Make a Video]  /  [Dans l'espagnol] [En francais]

Background

The predicted impacts of climate change as a result of global warming are increasing air and sea temperatures, rising sea levels, changes in rainfall patterns, and an increase in climate-related extreme events e.g. floods and droughts.  In some of the tropical regions of the world more intense hurricanes/tropical cyclones are also likely.

Beaches are among the systems likely to be at the forefront of the impact as they face rising sea levels, more intense hurricanes, more frequent coral bleaching episodes and ocean acidification.

Adaptations we make to climate change need to focus on making systems more resilient and healthy not just for today but for the long term.  A wide clean beach backed by a coastal forest and protected by a healthy coral reef can better withstand sea level rise and future more intense hurricane waves than a narrow beach, littered with plastic debris, confined by a concrete wall on the landward side and a degraded, dying coral reef on the seaward side.

The Sandwatch vision is to change the lifestyles and habits of children, youth and adults on a community-wide basis and develop awareness of the fragile nature of the marine and coastal environment and the need to use it wisely. This presents a framework that can used to help beaches, and the people depending on them for enjoyment, relaxation, exercise, sporting activities and livelihoods, begin to adapt to climate change and climate variability.

Competition Theme
The theme is coping with climate change: sandwatch leading the way and all videos submitted in this competition should illustrate the following three elements:

How climate change is (or will in the future) affect your beach
Your Sandwatch activities; these may include monitoring the beach, sharing information about the beach and climate change with others, and/or a specific project such as a beach clean-up or a tree planting activity
How the Sandwatch activities are making the beach more healthy and thereby more resilient to climate change
